1 Introduction

For my revision of the Xantholinini of the Oriental Region (BORDONI 2002), I was able to study material from Nepal, collected by Prof. J. Martens (University Mainz) and Dr. W. SCHAWALLER (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde, Stuttgart). The latter made subsequent expeditions 1997-2000 to western and central Nepal. The Xantholinini resulting from those expeditions were recently sent to me for study.

1 166th contribution on the knowledge of Staphylinidae.

2 STUTTGARTER BEITRAGE ZUR NATURKUNDE Ser. A, Nr. 690

In the present paper I report geographical data for several Nepalese taxa and de- scribe a new species. I have also added some new geographical data of Xantholinini which have been collected in other countries of the Oriental Region by other collec- tors.

Acknowledements

Ithank Dr. W. SCHAwALLER (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde, Stuttgart) who entrust- ed me with the study of his interesting material collected in Nepal. Thanks are also due to Dr. G. A. SAMUELSON (Bishop Museum, Honolulu) for sending me additional material of Xantholinini from the Oriental Region.

2 Material from Nepal

2.1 Thyreocephalus jocheni Bordoni, 2002 Nepal, Ramechap Distr., Jiri, 1900 m, W. SCHAWALLER leg., 4. V.1997, 1 ex. (SMNS).

Notes. This species was known from the central and northern parts of Nepal, and from Sikkim, Meghalaya (BorDonı 2002) and Assam (BORDONI 2003).

2.2 Thyreocephalus eppelsheimi (Bernhauer & Schubert, 1914)

Nepal, Dailekh Distr., Dailekh, 1600 m, W. ScHAWALLER leg., 1-2. VI.1998, 1 ex. (SMNS), 1 ex. (cB).

Notes. This species was known from northeastern India (Meghalaya, Sikkim), central and northern Nepal, and Bhutan (BoRDONI 2002).

2.3 Xantholinus hypsibathus Bernhauer, 1915

Nepal, Ramechap Distr., Jiri to pass before Shivalaya, 2000-2500 m, W. SCHAWALLER leg., 5.V.1997, 1 ex. (SMNS).

Notes. This very interesting species was known from mountains (2000-2500 m) in Pakistan, northern India, and Nepal (BoRDONI 2002). It is the only species of Xantholinus from (central) Nepal; the new record from Ramechap extends its distri- bution area to the southeast of this country. The Palaearctic genus Xantholinus De- jean is - in the northeastern part of the Manchurian subregion - only represented by X. semipallidus Bernhauer, 1931 (see BORDONI 2000), and in the northern part of the Indian subregion by X. hypsibathus which is, consequently, the most eastern species of this genus in the southern part of the Himalayas.

2.4 Lepidophallus schawalleri Bordoni, 2002

Nepal, Dolakha Distr., S slope of Khare Khola, 2100 m, W. SCHAWALLER leg., 2. VI.2000, 1 ex. (SMNS), 1 ex. (cB).

Notes. This species was known from northern India (Uttar Pradesh, western Bengal) and Nepal (BorRDONI 2002).

2.6 Someira hiulca Bordoni, 2002

(cB). Nepal, Nashing Dingma, W Surkie La, 2700 m, W. SCHAWALLER leg., 20.V.1997, 1 ex. (SMNS). - Nepal, Junbesi, 2700 m, W. SCHAWALLER leg., 11. V.1997, 1 ex. (SMNS). Nepal, Ramechap Distr, Mehabir Khola E Shivalaya, 2500-2600m, W. SCHAWALLER leg., 6.-7. V.1997, 1 ex. (SMNS).

Notes. S. hiulca, known only from the type series, was described from the Solukhumbu Distr. (Lukla) in eastern Nepal (BoRDONI 2002).

2.7 Someira martensi Bordoni, 2002 Nepal, Dolakha Distr., lower Khare Khola, 1050-1400 m, W. SCHAWALLER leg., 29. V.2000, 13 (SMNS).

Nepal, Dolakha Distr., lower Amatal Khola, 1700 m, W. SCHAWALLER leg., 9. VI.2000, 3 ex. (SMNS), 2 ex. (cB). - Nepal, Ramechap Distr., Mohabir Khola, E Shivalaya, 2500-2600 m, W. SCHAWALLER leg., 6.-7. V.1997, 1 ex. (SMNS), 1 ex. (cB).

Notes. This species was known from the central and eastern parts of Nepal (BORDONI 2002).

Notes. This species, which is characterised by a conspicuous spine on the right pleura of the male genital segment, was known from central Nepal (BORDON! 2002). The record from Dolakha extends its known distribution to the east.

2.10 Atopolinus jugi n.sp.

Holotype, 6: Nepal, Solukhumbu Distr., E Pangkongma La, 3000 m, W. SCHAWALLER leg., 17. V.1997 (SMNS).

Figs. 1-5. Atopolinus jugi n. sp. 1. Male visible tergite VI. 2. Posterior margin of male visible sternite VI. 3. Tergite of the male genital segment. 4. Sternite of the male genital segment. 5. Aedeagus. - Scale (of Fig. 5): 0.1 mm.

Description and differential diagnosis. Body length 8.5 mm; length from anterior margin of head to posterior margin of elytra 4.5mm. Brachypterous. Red- dish-brown with elytra and abdomen brown black; buccal apparatus, antennae and legs yellow-brown. Similar to A. basileius Bordoni from Thailand, but easily distin- guished, because the new species has a smaller body, pronotum with rounded ante- rior angles, dorsal series of 6 punctures rather than 11-12 punctures and lateral series of 5 punctures rather than 6-7 punctures, elytra shorter subrectangular, posteriorly

not dilated, with vanished humeri, thinner puncturation, which is arranged in spars- er series. Male visible tergite VI very characteristic (Fig. 1), very different from that of A. basileius (see figs. 2625-2626 in BORDONI 2002); male visible sternite VI with feebly concave posterior margin (Fig. 2); tergite and sternite of the male genital seg- ment as in Figs.3 and 4. Aedeagus (Fig.5) similar to that of A. basileius, but with parameres of different shape and internal sac equipped with about 17 big and differ- ently arranged spines.

Distribution. Known only from the type locality.
